JDG has teamed with the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families (DSCYF) to provide JDG like services for students at the Ferris School/Mowlds and Grace and Snowden Cottages in New Castle County.

The Ferris School is an 80-bed facility and the Mowlds Cottage is a 20 bed facility serving court adjudicated males, ages 13 to18 years.  These Youth, considered serious and/or chronic offenders, are sentenced to 6 months at Ferris followed by a 6-week transition at Mowlds.  The JDG Specialist is part of a the professional education team which designs an Individual Service Strategy used to map personal, academic and career goals for each participant.  The overall objective is to prepare the Youth for reintegration into their community.  Employment and/or an educational placement is required for release.  The JDG Specialist’s primary objective is to provide job preparation and placement (occasionally an educational or vocational placement) followed by six-months of follow-up services upon the participant’s release from the facility.

JDG also provides work readiness and life skills instruction using the Boy’s Town Model to the participants serving 30, 60 or 90-day sentences for minor offenses in Grace and Snowden Cottages.  Grace Cottage accommodates a maximum or 14 girls and Snowden a maximum of 16 boys.  Follow-up services are provided upon release.

An annual Career Day initiated in 2004 at the Ferris and New Castle County Detention Center with 7 employers has expanded to include the affiliated Cottages, Stevenson House in Sussex County, Silver Lake RTC in Middletown and involves as many as 20 agencies and/or businesses.  The Career Day continues to receive accolades from DSCYF Directors and staff, state agencies and participants.  Many agency and business representatives continue to support these programs throughout the year while serving as a guest speaker or presenters.
