“Where would I be without you?”

In honor of National Entrepreneurship Week (February 13-21, 2021), we are shining a light on former JDG participant, Tiara Wyche Yopp (’12), owner of Unfading Beauty Salon (Delmar, MD).

By Desiree Moore

“Mrs. Moore, where would I be without you?” Definitely, words that touched my heart as I entered the beautiful home salon of Tiara Wyche Yopp, JDG Class of 2012, for her to work her magic on my hair.

Tiara reminded me that she had been putting off making a call to the Delaware Learning Institute of Cosmetology to set up a tour and appointment with the Admissions Office. As she entered my JDG 12 class, I asked her if she had called, and she responded that she had not. Imitating me all too well, she said I called her over to my desk and when the class settled, announced that she was about to call the school. We discussed telephone etiquette tips and the students told her what she should say and how she should say it. “I was so nervous,” she remembered, “But I’m so glad you pushed me to make that call.”

A few days later, I drove Tiara to the tour and sat with her as she discussed her options with the Admissions Counselor. As we drove back to school, she turned to me and said, “I’m going to do this Mrs. Moore! I loved it!” She enrolled shortly after high school and upon completing her training, Tiara was offered a hair stylist’s position with SuperCuts. A little after five years with Super Cuts, Tiara and her husband bought a new home and worked diligently to complete her beautiful salon. She opened her doors two weeks before Christmas, in December 2020. She’s always dreamed of owning her own salon!

Tiara said she still has all of the clients that she’s had since she finished cosmetology school, and many of them have followed her to her new Maryland location. Maybe the hard work of preparing for and placing first, during the 2012 Job Survival, Delaware Career Association Competitive Events Conference paid off!

Tiara’s husband and three young children are her biggest cheerleaders. Her JDG teacher from high school is a very close second!
