“Look at me now!” Latoria_Ellis

These are the words that often run through my mind as I ponder where I am now compared to where I was in high school. Being raised in a single-parent home by my mother was a great challenge for the children in my family. However, despite many difficulties, it is now easy to see that I used these experiences as a fuel to develop a determination to succeed.

While in school, Jobs for Delaware Graduates (JDG) was a class in which I took great interest. JDG opened doors of opportunity that helped me advance in public speaking and overcome shyness. Before the class, I couldn’t have imagined that I had the ability to come out of my shell like I have.  JDG helped my inner self to shine. One of my fondest memories was participating in a mock court where students gave statements and underwent cross examinations. This was only one of the possible real-life scenarios that I’m grateful to have experienced through JDG.

In today’s market, successful adults must have the ability to communicate effectively and with confidence. In fact, communication skills are essential in life. The skills I learned through JDG helped me to learn how to plan, manage, and control my communications. In addition, the class allowed me to realize that I needed to surround myself with people who would inspire me to do the right things.

In 2004, the JDG teacher at Milford High School, Mrs. Wanda Hunt, presented an opportunity for someone to run to be a state officer of the Delaware Career Association (DCA). With Mrs. Hunt’s encouragement, I agreed to take a risk and participate. I prepared a speech and presented it to a couple of hundred people, and I was thrilled to be awarded the position of vice president for DCA. With my statewide responsibilities, I was granted a week in Washington and given the opportunity to engage with students from all over the country. This was an empowering and defining moment for me. I was honored to be among so many successful individuals, and at the end of the conference, I received a leadership certificate. The entire experience gave me a different perspective on life. Afterwards, I made a vow that despite the obstacles I may face in life, I would always strive for more and never become content with my current circumstances.

The skills attained from my JDG experience continues to enhance my life to this day. I am delighted to say that I now have my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, and I soon will be receiving my Master’s Degree in Information Technology/Web Design.

Shortly after receiving my Bachelor’s Degree, I started my own business, Creative and Positive Cleaning Services. The company practices green initiatives and only uses products that are non-toxic and bio-degradable. More information can be obtained by visiting the company website at www.creativepositivecleaningservices.org.

I am truly thankful for everything JDG has done for me.
