JDG Seaford students hear from local author to prepare for the future

SEAFORD, Del. – Seaford Middle School is the only school in Sussex County with the Jobs for Delaware Graduates program giving them the opportunity to hear from people who walked in their shoes and what they recommend for success.

“We all have superpowers and it’s up to us on how we use those things,” says Andre Allen.

Regardless of the experience, Seaford High School Graduate Andre Allen says no experience is wasted. Middle school students in the Jobs for Delaware Graduates program are being set up for success. “Leadership-based curriculum so our students go through units about communication, professionalism, high transition and they do community service,” says Desiree Moore.

Desiree Moore, Regional Supervisor with JDG says the more intimate learning style in the program makes all the difference. “We’re able to keep small classrooms so the teachers are able to get to know the students and they become confidants advocates for the students, and then, in turn, students really want to work hard and do things and get experience and exposure that we’re able to offer them,” she said.

Allen who graduated from Seaford High School says he’s aware of the reputation Seaford has which is why it’s so important for the next generation to break the cycle. “We had some stereotypes that go on in our community as far as the negative things, like crime but we’re just trying to encourage our youth to know that it’s not just on the adults to make a change, it starts with you guys,” he said.

Moore says the reputation isn’t stopping the future of Seaford. With the JDG program, the next generation will be ready for success. “The resiliency comes from learning those leadership skills and the communication, building that confidence and just being aware of what your possibilities are,” Moore said.

Desiree Moore says she’s seen many students go from the classroom to career through JDG. This is the second year of the program and she hopes it is expanded because there is a great need for the program.

Also, Andre Allen’s book that he presented to the students is Where the Blue Jay Rests.
