Retired NBA Player Visits JDGers at AIMS

Former NBA player, A. J. English, II, made a big impact during his visit to JDG at A.I. duPont Middle School.  

On Friday, January 19, 2017, Mr. English surprised JDGers with an important three-pointer message and a free throw treat!

Mr. English shared with the students that his journey to the NBA wasn’t easy!  His natural talent, hard work, and discipline made it possible!  He also explained that “The same type of efforts can make it happen in your school work.”


Mr. English played for the Washington Bullets for 10 years then played 10 additional years overseas. Prior to his professional career, Mr. English played basketball at Howard High School of Technology (1983–1986). During his junior year, his team won the State Championship and he received the Delaware High School Player of the Year (1986). After graduating high school, Mr. English attended Virginia Union University (1986–1990) where he continued to showcase his skills on the court. English was also named the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year (1990).

Mr. English currently has his own mentoring program, English Lessons Youth Mentoring, that provides services for the inner-city youth of Wilmington. His calling has always been to help children in the pursuit of education, to realize their purpose, and provide in a safe environment.

After his presentation, Mr. English surprised JDGers with a pizza!
